The Importance of Spaying or Neutering Your Cat

The obvious reason to spay or neuter your cat is to help control the pet homelessness problem by limiting unwanted pregnancies. There are also long-term health benefits for your cat that should be considered. Spaying your female kitten helps prevent uterine infections and mammary cancer. Neutering your male kitten helps reduce the chances of testicular cancer and prostate problems.

During the breeding season, felines go into heat for four to five days every three weeks. The cat will likely yowl during this time and may experience vaginal bleeding. The spaying procedure eliminates the heat cycle for your cat.

A neutered male cat is less likely to spray and mark his territory. He will also not stray from home roaming the neighborhood looking for a mate. Cats are known for getting into fights when attempting to find a mate.

When To Spay or Neuter Your Cat

It is important to discuss the best time to spay or neuter your kitten with one of our veterinarians. The procedure can be performed on kittens as young as eight weeks old. General practice suggests having the spay or neuter surgery completed before the kitten is five months old.

After the Surgery

Each animal's recovery needs are different. We will discuss the specific needs for your kitten to ensure your pet has a speedy recovery. Some general post-surgical tips include:

  • A safe and quiet spot indoors for your pet to recover away from other pets.
  • Prevent your pet from running or jumping for two weeks after the surgery.
  • Prevent your pet from licking the incision, a cone may be required.
  • Do not bathe your pet for at least ten days after the surgery.
  • Contact our office if you notice any redness or swelling.
