What is Cherry Eye?

Dogs and cats have a third eyelid in addition to the upper and lower ones on each eye. This third eyelid protects the eyes by shielding them from trauma and preventing damage. Cherry eye is a condition in specific breeds of dogs and, in a few cases, cats, where there is swelling and reddening of a tear gland in the third eyelid. These glands are crucial for optimal eye health. Contact our veterinarians at Animal Wellness Center if you suspect that your furry friend is suffering from cherry eye.

What is Cherry Eye?

Cherry eye is a condition that occurs when a tear gland in the third eyelid becomes inflamed. It can affect either one or both eyes. There are certain breeds of dogs and cats that are more susceptible to cherry eye than others. When detected early, cherry eye is treatable, but if left to affect the gland longer, the gland pre-lapses and increases the risks for conjunctivitis.

The Signs of Cherry Eye

It is easy to spot cherry eye in pets during the early days. Pets with cherry eye appear to have red or pink bulges coming from the inner corner of the eyes. This bulge may come and go, but in some cases, it stays until there is veterinary intervention. Some pets with cherry eye also display signs of dry eye, irritation, corneal ulcers, and cornea inflammation which cause discomfort in the eyes. There is no apparent cause of cherry eye in pets, but some breeds are more prone than others.

Treatment for Cherry Eye

It is important to seek treatment for your pet if you notice the signs of cherry eye in your dogs such as thick discharges, smooth, red, and round masses in the corner of the eye, or attempts to paw at the eye. Our veterinarians will advise you on the possible treatment options for cherry eye after conducting a pet exam.
